On November 10th, 1969, “Sesame Street” an American television program for young children made its debut.
Maybe many of you remember its memorable theme song “Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street”.
The goal was to create a program for preschoolers (children 3-to-5-year-olds) that taught the alphabet, how to count, the colors, how to cross a street, and many more things in order to prepare them for their early school years.
Producer Joan Ganz Cooney hired puppeteer Jim Henson to create the characters for the show. Henson created a cast that became Sesame Street seal: Big Bird, the Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, among others.
The combination of Jim Henson’s Muppets, brilliant scripts specially written for kids, humor, and cultural references, rapidly made of Sesame Street a worldwide success.
Over the years, many countries produced their own Sesame Street program. These programs were adapted to the local customs, culture and way of living. The first countries doing so were: Mexico (for all Latin America) and Brazil. Soon after, many countries in Europe, Asia, Middle East and later Africa, broadcasted their own “Sesame Street” version.
Today, Sesame Street is the TV program for kids that has been in the air for the longest time in the history of television.
